In the 1960's a hair style called the fashion mullet came on the
scene. It was popular on and off until 1994 when a song by a hip-hop
band, called 'Mullet Head' was aired. At that time many had this haircut
done and it was called a hair disaster. However, there are people who
like to feel it is the hip thing to have.
The cut of the hair is
very simple, being hair cut short on top and sides and left long in
back. In many cases the hair is shagged, giving it a disheveled look.
One will often find people called hipsters who wear heavy metal, tattoos
and certain types of clothing, wearing this style of hair.
Depending
on the style, sometimes it is not possible to tell if the hair is
combed or not as it is shagged and lays in uneven array. Highly favored
by the hip-hop crowd it has now been adapted by some high school
students. At youth gatherings, such as rave parties, one will often find
men and women with this hairstyle.
Some of the people who wear
this type of hairstyle say that they can go for long periods of time
without washing it with no problems. Younger men and women who wear this
style feel they are in on the latest trend and are making a statement.
Each one has their own feelings about their hair being the most popular
style on the market.
It is believed that one has a 'true mullet'
when their hair grows down to the middle of their back. One often sees a
person on a motorcycle with this type haircut and their hair blowing in
the wind. Many people braid or put the hair into a ponytail to keep it
contained.
This hairstyle has been in and out of favor from the
beginning. It had a revival spurt in 1999 when man's fashioner, Gucci,
presented a style show with the models having their hair in this style.
His version was to have the hair on the front and sides very short,
almost shaved.
